Adif restores train traffic on the Zaragoza-Huesca and Zaragoza-Lérida lines after a month of work

Adif continues to move forward according to schedule in the execution of major modernization of the Zaragoza-Huesca-Canfranc line financed by the European Union via the Next Generation funds. From this Thursday, September 1strespecting the planned schedule, train circulation in the Zaragoza-Huesca corridor has been restored, once the works of the first phase of the preventive action project on the railway platform in the Zuera area have been completed. In addition, rail traffic has also recovered in Zaragoza-Lleida Corridoralso affected by these actions.

However, the circulation of trains between Huesca and Canfranc will remain closed until November 16 due to the works of modernization which are carried out between Placencia del Monte and Ayerbe. To guarantee the mobility of citizens, Renfe maintains a alternative road service between Huesca and Canfranc.

The work carried out in the section of Zuera during the month of August will have continuity during the next year, and will consist of the conditioning of the earth in the Huesca branch of the Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona high-speed lineover a distance of approximately 9km. The investment exceeds 14 million euros.

This project includes works to improve the ground under the track platform, with the aim of improving its consolidation and prevent future conditions on rail infrastructure. In this way, it is intended to avoid possible anomalies, increasing the bearing capacity of the foundation soil.

The performances carried out and in which they participated a hundred workers, supported by specialized machines 7 days a week, consist of: drainage works over 300 m to evacuate the water that seeps into the ground; consolidation of the platform by injections of dry mortar with more than 4,100 m3 of injections and more than 27,500 m of drilling up to 25 m deep; reinforcement of the platform by means of geocomposite, which will be installed under the ballast, in the sections where the soil is less compact. Nearly 62,800 m2 of geogrid are used; instrumentation of the track over a 400 m section using devices to monitor the condition of the track, in real time and remotely; erection of 8.6 km of track superstructure for later replacement; excavation of nearly 21,300 m3 of land and replacement of 6,390 m of prefabricated cable sheath.

In the meantime, for the complete renovation of the track in the section Placencia del Monte-Ayerbe are destined €19.1 million. Currently, the superstructure of the road has already been lifted and the earthworks and cross-drainage works are in progress. This action represents the first phase of the project to promote the Plan for the improvement and adaptation to international traffic of the Huesca-Canfranc line, which includes interventions, already awarded, the Jaca-Canfranc sections, for an amount of 37.7 million, and Ayerbe-Calderenas, with an investment of 47.9 million.

Integral renovation works of the Plasencia del Monte-Ayerbe section of the Huesca-Canfranc line.

These actions on the Huesca-Canfranc line will allow remove various speed limits, and modernizing the equipment and layout of the track, which will make it possible to increase the maximum traffic speeds. All this improving the curve radii to reach a sustainable speed in accordance with the orography and the characteristics and limitations of the route, which is conditioned by the fact that it crosses a particularly mountainous area and with a large number of tunnels and metal bridges.

In addition, these works will improve traffic regularity and bring greater reliability, availability and efficiency to the new superstructure, reduce maintenance requirements and the likelihood of incidents attributable to railway infrastructure and facilities.
