The mayor of Huelva, gabrielle cross, showed “satisfaction and enthusiasm by verifying that in the next seven or eight months we will have our old barracks in Santa Fe and its redeveloped surroundings, including the wall of San Pedro, fully recovered for the enjoyment of the people of Huelva”. After having followed the actions in progress and accompanied by the deputy mayor for urban planning, the environment and the ecological transition of the town hall of Huelva, Manuel Gómez Márquez, the mayor underlined “the rhythm of the works, the respect and the care, with meticulous attention and almost artisanal actions that are carried out to recover the original building, working with the care that the things that matter require to show that it matters to us and a lot”.

This restoration is carried out with the same “care and care than that of the building and consists of a thorough cleaning of the exposed brick, its replacement if necessary with parts expressly manufactured to obtain the template of the original brick and its color, the closest thing to the original bricks, which will then be protected by a very subtle glaze”.

Until Foundation and drainage works were carried out in the main building. After the analysis of the structure, the wooden mezzanine was demolished and the iron structure was completely cleaned, reinforcing the 12 cast iron pillars with independent concrete footings and the interior with a concrete slab.

currently working in the vaulted part of the semi-basement that overlooks Plaza Dos de Mayo. In addition, the land is being reconsidered to build a small annex building to house the elevators and vertical communications. It will be a designer metal structure, connected to the main building by a glazed gallery that will house infrastructures placed outside to respect the building and not have to break the brick vault, one of the most characteristics of the building.

In the coming weeks, the iron structure will be analyzed by a specialized company. Cleaning work on the facade of the building on rue Velarde has also begun. Remember that the project focuses on the rehabilitation, consolidation and reinforcement of the building, and not on its uses, being a very versatile project. Improve the image of the environment for the duration of the works, a tarp has been placed around the perimeter of the buildingwhere the different uses that the iconic property has had throughout its history are attractively reported.

General project data

The works began at the beginning of June, have an execution period of 12 months and an amount of almost 3 million euros, 60% subsidized under the 1.5% cultural program of the Ministry of Public Works. This is the first phase of a very ambitious action, which first concerns this consolidation and rehabilitation, to then undertake the functional adaptation of the building to its future socio-cultural use.

The rehabilitation project aims to restore the barracks building to its original state, highlighting the large open-plan interior space, while preserving its steel frame, which is an exceptional example of iron architecture.

It is a question of giving back to the city an architectural icon more than a century old, having been originally a food market, then a School of Arts and Crafts; School of mine foremen, popular library, museum of painting and, finally, police headquarters.
