CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ / The Town Hall of Caravaca and the natural environment carry out works for the improvement and conservation of the monumental trees of Fuentes del Marqués


In this first phase, a controlled and minimally invasive pruning treatment is being developed to eliminate dry branches due to their risk of falling on the pedestrian traffic area of ​​the area and favor the physiology of the tree, by respecting the trees as much as possible.

A technical team of specialized arborists is carrying out the work, which will continue in a second phase at the beginning of the year with soil decompaction work and the addition of organic matter to it to promote the entry of nutrients up to at the roots.

As explained by the city councilor to the environment, the objectives of the project are, among other things, to guarantee the conservation of the monumental trees, to program the actions necessary for their improvement and to enhance the conservation works, taking into account the techniques traditional arboriculture and maintenance.

The Town Hall of Caravaca de la Cruz and the General Directorate for the Natural Environment are carrying out this week a series of works for the improvement and conservation of the monumental trees in the natural area of ​​Fuentes del Marqués. These actions will be carried out in different phases and with the main objective of protecting and conserving species, which are mainly ash, all banana trees and holm oak.

In this first phase, the maintenance work of the species is carried out through the pruning of dry branches by a technical team of specialized arborists, using the climbing technique and with an elevating platform to reach those places of great height. . In these species, according to the technicians, a controlled and minimally invasive pruning treatment is necessary to eliminate the dry branches, due to their numerous presence and the risk of falling on the pedestrian circulation area of ​​the area. In addition, for the ash tree at the entrance to the area and which is one of the most valuable and important specimens in the Region of Murcia, the branches corresponding to neighboring trees have been eliminated which, due to their proximity or their position, obstruct or prevent the incidence of the sun on certain parts of the ash tree.

Likewise, the project aims to adapt the tree environment to public use through the installation of signage, fences and benches for visitors, to promote knowledge and respect for the monumental trees of the Region of Murcia and the importance of their conservation for its important role within the living natural heritage of the Region.

Soil loosening

Along with the pruning, other works of the project will concern the loosening of the soil and the addition of organic matter, which will be carried out in a second phase at the beginning of the new year.

Currently, the different plant species in the area, as the technicians explain, are on compacted soil that makes its correct development considerably difficult. This project proposes the decompaction of the soil closest to each of them and the supply of organic matter to favor the development and the state of conservation of the root system of the tree, favoring the entry of nutrients and aeration of the ground.

Other actions developed in the natural space

As part of the battery of measures promoted by the City Council of Caravaqueño throughout this legislature, a deterrent parking has been implemented and a path has been created from the Camino del Huerto to favor the arrival on foot or by bicycle, limiting road traffic in the vicinity of the square.
