The City Council of Jaén and the Caja Rural de Jaén Foundation have convened the XII Decortoán Joven Short Film Contest with the greatest number of financial endowments and prizes. The competition aims to encourage audiovisual creation among young filmmakers and to increase the offer of socio-cultural and artistic leisure activities in the city.
This was highlighted this Tuesday during the presentation of the contest, which had the Councilor for Youth and Popular University, Eva Funes, and the director of the aforementioned entity, Luis Jesús García-Lomas, in addition to its artistic director, Carolina Canada.
In the act, a greater economic endowment with two new prizes was announced. One of them will focus on international cooperation, with the prize from the Andalusian Fund of Municipalities for International Solidarity (Famsi) endowed with 750 euros and another the UNED jury prize, endowed with 500 euros, and whose members of the jury want to highlight a profession in particular.
The mayor pointed out that there are many works that are presented on international cooperation, so it was wished “that they have their own category to be able to recognize them expressly”. In addition, he mentioned the organization of parallel activities “to help these young creators in their work”.
Also in this impetus given to the Young Decortoán, the director of the Foundation alluded to the figure of the actress and filmmaker Carolina Cañada who joins the contest as another novelty. “It is a contest that aims to promote young people who work in audiovisual media in a contest that already has national recognition,” he said.
For her part, the artistic director explained that the event wishes to expand its activities with other activities parallel to the exhibitions of the works presented, scheduled for next May and June. “We want to collaborate with associations of filmmakers and carry out a task of accompanying participants on how to write a screenplay, work on the production, present a project or ask for help to carry it out,” said he added.
The participation period is open until February 28th. The Caja Rural de Jaén Foundation prize for the best short film is created, endowed with 1,500 euros; Caja Rural de Jaén Foundation Award for Equality Values, endowed with 750 euros, and the Famsi Award for Short Film with International Cooperation Content, endowed with 750 euros.
They are joined by the special UNED jury prize, endowed with 500 euros; Prize of the Caja Rural de Jaén Foundation for the best local short film, endowed with 500 euros; Deán Plaza Bar Award for Local Short Film, with 250 euros, and UNED Award ‘Young Promises of Short Films of Jaen, endowed with 250 euros.
Anyone born or residing in Spanish territory and whose age does not exceed 35 years on February 28, 2023 can participate in this call. Likewise, filmmakers born or residing in Spanish territory can participate, without age limit. , provided that because the works presented deal with an explicitly youthful theme and/or equality between women and men.
To opt for the UNED ‘Young promises of the Jiennense short film’ award, young people or teams of young people whose members (directors and/or filmmakers), born or residing in the city of Jaén, must not exceed 24 years of age as of February 28, 2023. .
The theme of the works will be free, both in the genre of narrative fiction and in that of documentary or animation. Participants will present their work preferably in digital format and may also present it on CD or DVD. The file sent digitally must be compressed and contain both the requested documentation and the short film, and cannot exceed a total capacity of 1 GB.
The works can be delivered on CD or DVD: in person, at the premises of the Youth Office (Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., excluding public holidays) or by registered mail to the postal address next: Jaén City Hall Youth Office Decortoán Joven Short Film Contest (Avenida de Andalucía, number 47 – fifth floor, 23005 Jaén).

245 WORKS IN THE LATEST EDITION
Last year, 245 audiovisuals took part in this competition, which corresponded, in their entirety, to productions made in particular in the years 2020 and 2021 and which coincided during the period of health emergency due to the covid-19 pandemic.
This strong participation attracted works from all over the country and from other countries such as the United States, Cuba, Italy, Holland, India, Portugal or Rwanda. In them, the impetus acquired by the documentary genre and the increase in short films that offer notorious feminist content already stood out.
