The cleaning and repair work on the sills begins with a two-month execution forecast

  • The Alcañiz City Council has received a grant from the Government of Aragon with which it has started the cleaning and repair works of the dams and footbridges on the Guadalope river, affected by the accumulation of plant material from the floods and the avenues throughout the stormy spring. and the first summer months. The project, worth approximately 42,000 euros, of which the DGA contributes 80%, has an execution period of approximately two months, which will be used to remove all this material, clear the environment, improve the appearance and clearing the watercourse, as well as repairing the boards and fencing of the walkways which were also affected by the damage.

“In this way, we are responding to a request that we received both in plenary session of the city council and from the inhabitants themselves”, explains the first deputy mayor, Javier Baigorri, who presented the works and visited the beginning of the same on the ground. The first working group is already working on the bank at the foot of the hill, facing San Francisco, on the dam which is in the worst condition and which has the most elements to replace; The first task is to clean up all the accumulated reeds that proliferate in these times of drought in Guadalope’s own bed. From there, the cleaning itself will be undertaken.

Once the remnants of vegetation have been removed, the project determines that “it will be necessary to repair the affected sections of fence and the wooden slats” on the footpath “that have been torn out and washed away by the flow of the river”. In this way, the action pursues a global conditioning which, in addition, “will serve to allow paths, paths and platforms with which it will be possible to more easily access the dams in the event of floods such as those that happened again,” says Baigorri. In this first dam, about fifteen wooden planks and a total of 80 meters of fence are counted for its replacement.

Likewise, in the second spillway, downstream of the river towards the Plaza de Toros, the project proposes the same type of work “although the volume of vegetation is much smaller, the access is easier and the conditions” of the footbridge they are minor. The estimate produced by the project is to replace two strips of the pedestrian platform, and about ten meters of fence, which will complete an action for which 42,000 euros will be invested with an execution time not exceeding two months. The weather forecast marks the continuation of the drought by which the level of the Guadalope River continues to maintain a low flow, which should help the progress of some work which has been attributed to the firm Engineering and Global Techniques for Environmental Resolution, based in Zaragoza.

The cleaning of the sills is in addition to the bank maintenance contract which is in progress and is already working on the margins to ensure a clean appearance and adequate practicability. The first weeks of work made it possible to recover the pedestrian crossing in certain inaccessible places after the summer storms, as well as to clear and significantly open up the areas where a large quantity of weeds had developed. Approximately 95,000 euros per year will be invested by the Town Hall for these daily tasks of conservation and maintenance of meadows, gardens and other green spaces. Duties will include pruning, replacement, clearing, paid irrigation and other agricultural and forestry work, as well as the conservation and maintenance of irrigation systems and street furniture, including litter bins and benches. .
