The ZIT Jaén will make it possible to computerize public lighting and public transport or to give priority to buses at traffic lights

It is called ZIT, it will invest seven million euros and includes a 130 kilometer fiber optic network whose preliminary work has begun, for intelligent management of mobility, traffic lights and lighting. With this, the Jaén City Council wants to move towards what is called a “smart city”, a smart city or one that applies new technologies in order to provide public services more efficiently and at lower energy costs.

The Technological Innovation Zone (ZIT) will also apply to waste collection and street cleaning and, above all, to sustainable mobility, such as giving priority to urban transport by bus at traffic lights and efficiently managing all the municipal car parks, as indicated on Tuesday by the councilor for procurement, control of public services and municipal projects, Francisco Lechuga, who visited these first works

The fiber optic network will be interconnected via smart nodes, thanks to the installation of 51 “smart poles” or intelligent poles. Specifically, streetlights that will have cameras, LED information screens or sensors for real-time data collection, management and instant information to citizens.

They will allow, among many other possibilities, to give priority to collective transport, thanks to a system of traffic lights that will affect the 519 elements of this type that exist in Jaén and that will distinguish between buses and other vehicles, with a system that will be implemented in the main streets and avenues of the capital.

The councilor clarified that currently the staff in charge of the project, which is carried out through the concessionaire Indra-Alisea, is in charge of revising the public lighting pipes, as a preliminary phase to the installation of the optical fiber, a so-called boring task.

The intervention received the approval of the municipal plenary session last April, which allowed the start of the works, which have a deadline of execution of twelve months.

“The works are progressing at a good pace and the deadlines are being met for this investment to materialize in April, which will mean that Jaén is positioning itself as a reference ‘smart city’ in Spain”, he said.

At the same time, municipal staff are being trained in the Horus program, which will operate under the aegis of the new “smart city” platform. The control center, with its own staff, will be located in the premises of the Local Police, the packaging of which is already being developed.

The city council has been working on the ZIT Jaén for two years. It will be developed thanks to a public-private collaboration and is financed at zero rate by the municipal coffers, since it is the concessionaire himself who advances the investment, charged to the collection of the fee paid by the Town Hall for the supply of this service.

The city councilor took the opportunity to recall that as part of this continuous improvement program for public services, improvements have also been made to the 74 ornamental fountains and 186 standpipes, giving as an example the complete rehabilitation of all the fountains in Boulevard Park, Santo Tomás and Las Batallas, in some cases “the result of historic and embarrassing abandonment”, he said.

To this has been added the improvement of the drinking fountains, with the installation of chlorinators, the placement of solenoid valves and the modification of the controls to activate these elements, which allows greater control and less expense, avoiding dump to purge or waste that it was generated with ineffective controls.
