The Monastery of San Xoán de Camba

The old monastery of San Xoán de Camba was for a long time an important abbey and a double royal monastery, with a community of men and another of women.. Its foundation dates back to the tenth century, by the work of Diego I, Bishop of Ourense. Of this primitive construction, only three pieces in granite in the light pre-Romanesque style have been preserved: a mullioned window and two reliefs (an adoration and a flagellation) preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Ourense.

The current church, from the 16th-18th centuries and which today functions as a parish church, preserves precious artistic pieces. Its large tower dates from 1779, although it also has a subterranean sacristy that is probably older. Several anthropoid tombs and 4th century coins of Constantine the Great were found inside, reflecting the centuries of history of this place.

To the south of the church, part of the outbuildings of the old monastery, now in ruins, has been preserved.

This heritage complex has the status of property belonging to the Catalog of Cultural Heritage of Galicia under article 30 of Law 5/2016, of Cultural Heritage of Galicia.
