Thick, on stage: Avilés includes two of his works in his cultural poster

Natalio Grueso, the former director of the Niemeyer Center, sentenced in 2020 to eight years in prison for a continuous offense of embezzlement of public funds in competition with another prosecuted for false commercial documents during his time at the head of said cultural center, returns to the scene. But not as a manager but as a playwright, and instead of Niemeyer, on the stage of the Palacio Valdés theater.

EscenAvilés – the joint theater program offered for a decade by the town hall of Avilés and the Niemeyer Cultural Center – includes a total of 15 titles for this first quarter of the year, including two with the Grueso label: an adaptation of the play of Peter Shaffer classic “Equus” and the dramaturgy “Lorca de Saura”, a production created by the filmmaker around the figure of the poet from Granada. Culture Advisor Yolanda Alonso highlighted the selection of the two pieces for their quality. “There is not much more to say,” he concluded.

The quarter opens on Friday January 20 in the auditorium of the Niemeyer Center with “Vive Molière”, with a text by Álvaro Tato and a staging by Yayo Cáceres. In this case there will be a session at 8:00 p.m. and also in the morning, because one of the wishes of the organizers is, with the same poster, to attract young audiences to the theatre. It will be on January 28, at 8:15 p.m., when “Lorca de Saura” will be performed, with a drama by Natalio Grueso and a direction by Carlos Saura. On February 3, Péris-Mencheta will land at the Niemeyer with one of the most successful shows of the season: “Ladies football club”.

On February 10, the Palacio Valdés theater will host the world premiere of “Bad Times for Lyrics”, by Albert Boadella and Antonio Comas. Also in February, on the 24th, “En tierra extrana” will be performed, an original idea by José María Cámara and Juan Carlos Rubio.

“Friendship” by Juan Mayorga, as LA NUEVA ESPAÑA has already advanced, completes the cultural cycle of this quarter in Avilés. Aviles’ show will be the first of his national tour after the season the show will spend at Naves del Español, Madrid (starting January 25). Last spring, the estuary complex hosted “El Golem” and a few weeks ago it was the Palacio Valdés theater that visited the Madrid playwright and Blanca Portillo with “Silencio”. Mayorga’s ties with Avilés are intensifying again.

As a final touch to this season, “Equus” will arrive in Avilés on March 17, a text by Peter Shaffer adapted by Natalio Grueso with Carolina África at the helm. On stage will be Roberto Álvarez, Álex Villazán, Manuela Paso, Claudia Galán and Jorge Mayor. It will be at the Palacio Valdés, at 8:15 p.m.

The “Off Niemeyer” cycle has programmed three functions: “La suerte” (January 13), “Versión” (February 11) and “El grito del Cardo” (March 25). The program for “Hecho en Asturias” includes “La ley de la Selva”, an adaptation by Francisco Pardo of a text by Elvira Lindo; “Gris de Ausencia” and “El acompañante”, by Roberto “Tito” Cossa and Carlos Gorostiza and “Extrarradios”, world premiere by Piquero Producciones Teatrales on March 16 and included in 25M events (free admission).

In Music on Stage, the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias will present its “Symphonic Dances” at the Auditorium of the Casa de Cultura, under the direction of the maestro of Oviedo Pablo González. And thanks to the collaboration agreement between the Department of Culture of Avilés and the Teatro Nacional de la Zarzuela, of the Zarza project that will also benefit the secondary schools of Avilés, it will arrive at the Palacio Valdés Theater for all audiences, immediately after its premiere in Madrid, “I will love you”.

Yolanda Alonso, Councilor for Culture and Promotion of the City of Avilés, and Carlos Cuadros, General Manager of the Niemeyer Center, presented the program together yesterday. They highlighted how the characteristics of escenAvilés, avant-garde and of quality, are concentrated in stage proposals capable of satisfying all audiences.
