The Andalusian Society of Medical Oncology (SAOM) has awarded Dr. Enrique Aranda, Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Cordoba, its honorary award, in recognition of his long professional career and experience in the field of health and education. field, and his scientific contribution to the field of research in medical oncology and cancer treatment in Andalusia in recent years, which have made him a reference in the specialty in Spain and internationally. The SAOM awards this prize each year to exceptional professionals in the world of medical oncology or who have excelled in the field of the fight against cancer.
With this award, “we want to recognize his magnificent work and his dedication, especially in the field of colon cancer and digestive tumors, in which he has become a reference and an example for young oncologists in our community, being also president of the Spanish group for the treatment of digestive tumours”, underlined the president of SAOM, Dr. Antonio Rueda.
In his career, “in addition to standing out for his medical and scientific work, his commitment and his professionalism, he has also done so for his humanity and dedication to cancer patients, so this recognition is more than deserved for one of the most prestigious Andalusian oncologists in our professional activity”, declared the president of SAOM. Enrique Aranda is a true symbol of Andalusian and Spanish medical oncology, and is considered a reference for the different generations of oncologists who have trained and learned through his work and research in this professional healthcare field.
Enrique Aranda received this honorary award during the gala dinner of the IX SAOM Congress, from the hands of its president, Dr. Antonio Rueda, and its vice-president, Dr. Ana Laura Ortega. During this Congress, held a few days ago in Malaga, more than 300 oncologists and experts gathered to analyze the latest advances and therapeutic novelties in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Andalusia.
Other research and training grants
In addition to the honorary award, the SAOM also presented during the Congress the scholarships and subsidies that the Scientific Society allocates to the training and research on cancer of Andalusian oncologists. Thus, the scholarship for a two-year stay for training in a reference center abroad was awarded to Dr. Carlos Torrado Martín, from the Medical Oncology Service of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital in Seville; and “Dr. Moreno Nogueira” for the best translational research project, awarded to Dr. Laura Gálvez Carvajal, from the Medical Oncology Service of the Regional and Virgen de la Victoria University Hospitals in Málaga, for her work “Circulating tumor DNA as a predictive biomarker of response in patients with de novo classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma: personalized medicine strategy”.
Likewise, the extraordinary scholarship “Dr. Ruiz Borrego” for the best breast cancer research project, which was awarded to Dr. Ana Godoy Ortiz, from the Medical Oncology Service of the Regional University Hospitals and Virgen de la Victoria de Málaga, for her work “Multi- OMICS of cancer HER2-positive breast cancer: molecular differences between HER2-enriched and non-enriched intrinsic molecular subtype, relationship with biological heterogeneity and treatment response”. All of these scholarships represent an endowment of more than 120,000 euros from SAOM.
Finally, the prizes for best oral communication and best poster of the Congress were also awarded to Dr. Jaime Lluch Gómez, from the medical oncology department of the Puerta del Mar University Hospital in Cádiz, for his work “Efficacy of adjuvant treatment with trastuzumab in early breast cancer HER2: an observational study in the last 15 years”, and to Dr. Marta Bernal-Gómez, also from the Medical Oncology Department of the Puerta del Mar University Hospital in Cádiz, for her work “Influence of reproductive history of women in breast cancer subtype and survival”.
